How to Reset a Mac with MDM

Last updated: April 4, 2025

If you need to reset a Mac that has MDM installed even if you don't have access to the user's password, you can perform a factory reset using the Recovery Mode. The exact procedure differs depending on whether you have an Apple Silicon (M1, M2, etc.) or Intel-based Mac.

For Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, etc.)

  1. Restart the Mac and hold the power button until you see the startup options screen

  2. In Recovery Mode, look for "Erase This Mac" in the menu bar at the top of the screen

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to erase the Mac and reinstall macOS

Important Notes

  • An internet connection is required to reactivate the Mac and reinstall macOS

  • This process will delete all content, data, and settings from the Mac

  • The device may appear offline in the MDM interface while in Recovery Mode

  • If the reset process fails, you may need to visit an Apple Store with proof of purchase to restore the device

For Intel-based Macs, a different procedure is required. Contact support for specific instructions for Intel-based devices.
